31 days of Art
January 2021 Jasmine Quinsier Artist Statement www.minaswirled.com I dont have to say how different our times are right now. Headlines everyday, yes everyday, innodate us: the pandemic, COVID, death, numbers, spiking, vaccine, social distancing, masks, stay safe, etc. Im sure you know what Im talking about. This year I wanted to make art out of the news, even better, out of old news. So I went back in time, 1918 to 1920 and picked out articles about the Spanish Influenza. The Spanish Flu came in 4 waves and infected 500 million people worldwide with the H1N1 virus. Ive included some of the old articles I chose to work with in making my Disk Series. Every disk has an article incorporated somehow. The media used for this series, includes, laser cut acrylic, embroidery on lace and mosquito netting, laser cut paper, acrylic paint, mixed media collage and illustration. Some of the disks are still working progress as I plan to continue this series until the end of the COVID-19 pandemic. I enjoyed working with these articles to understand the full scope of the times. Getting to read the articles that stated, “NO NEW CASES,” or “Masks will be put into disregard at noon today.” helped me to feel comforted by an eventual solution to this alternative reality we are all finding ourselves in. So in my journey of beautifying the news, I found hope, creativity and levity for my soul. I hope you enjoy as much as I did. www.minaswirled.com www.instagram.com/visionaryartnm/ |
